Descendants of

 Isaac Teague

The name Teague in Ireland is derived from a number of distinct Gaelic 0' Taighe.

Septs who adopted Tighe, Tigue or Teague are the anglicized version of the names.

The name is pronounced as "Tig". To pronounce it as rhyming with league would

be an insult. The translation of Teague is "poet or bard".

Short Biography of

William Henry Teague

(1847-1932)

William Henry Teague was born in Tennessee in 1849 to William Teague and Mary Kitts.  William and Mary moved to

Missouri sometime after 1849 and William passed away.  Mary then married James Byrd 13 February 1859 in Stone County

Missouri near Springfield.  In the 1860 U.S. Census for Stone County Missouri William Henry is not listed as living with

James Byrd.  In the 1900 U.S. census, William Henry lists himself as being born in  Missouri, and in the 1910 census his gives

his birth place as Tennessee.  On the birth certificate for his son Albert Sidney Teague,  William Henry is listed

as being from Tennessee.

Much of William Henry’s history can be found in a book entitled “ZEPHYR YESTERDAY AND TODAYWith 120 Genealogies of Zephyr’s

Pioneer Families by Mrs. Jesse B. (Avis) Bettis And Mrs. Mattie (McKinney) Baird Published by Banner Printing Company Brownwood, Texas

In his youth, family tradition has it that he played the fiddle for dances and social functions.  William Henry probably came to

Texas in the mid to late 1860’s.  It is said in the family that he hunted buffalo in west Texas.  He married Rebecca Jane Routh on

31 March 1870 in Collin County Texas.  It is not known if he got religion before or after he married, but William Henry became

a circuit preacher of the Baptist hellfire and damnation persuasion.  He preached throughout Brown county, Texas.  He and

Rebecca Jane had nine children as follow:

Alfred Marion – born 26 Feb 1871 Mckinney , Sherman Texas

Alice E. – born 3 February 1873, Brown County Texas, d. 13 March 1907

Perry Jesse – born 1892,  d. 3 September 1960

Albert Sidney “Dick” – born 17 August 1893, Brown County Texas

William Henry settled in the town of Zephyr, Texas and became the first pastor of the “Bethel Baptist Church” located on the

Turkey Peak road.  The Bethel Baptist Church came about from a consolidation of the Turkey Peak and Antioch Baptist Churches.

During his time in Zephyr, the question of prohibition arose.  William Henry, being the good Baptist Shepherd he was, got up a

petition for prohibition.  He was able to obtain 75 signatures on 16 May 1901.  Some of the petitioners must have had a change of

heart a month later.  On 15 June 1901 an election was held.  Prohibition was defeated, 50 for, and 76 against.  The next Sunday

sermon at the Bethel Baptist church must have been a real scorcher.  William Henry was also a member of the Zephyr Masonic

Lodge #591.

A few years before his death in 1932, William Henry would travel to Ballinger, Texas to visit his son Gerald.  He was nearly blind

at this time, but insisted on driving his car.  Someone from Zephyr would follow his car as far as Coleman, Texas where Gerald

Preston would meet him and follow him on in to Ballinger.  One time while visiting in Ballinger, an airplane came to town.  Gerald
