Short Biography of

Priscilla Ann Hutton

Priscilla Ann Hutton was born in South Carolina on 27 December 1809 to Joseph Hutton.  The date is according to her tombstone in Green

County Alabama.

On 14 February 1828, she married Charles H. Coleman of Mount Hebron,  Green County, Alabama.  All children of this marriage are not known, but

those that are listed are:

Aquilla – born 1832, Mount Hebron, Alabama

John R. – born 1834, Mount Hebron, Alabama

Permelia Elizabeth – born 1837, Mount Hebron

Charles C. – born 1839, Mount Hebron, Alabama

In 1848 Charles H. Coleman died, and control of the family plantation passed to Priscilla Ann.  In the 1850 U.S. Census, Aquilla and John R.

are listed as students.  The plantation’s real estate value is listed as $3,000.00.  Priscilla Ann gives her age as 39.  This does not agree with

her birth date given on her tombstone.  If the date on the tombstone is correct, she would have been 41 years of age at this time.

In the 1860 U.S. Census, Priscilla Ann is still in control of the plantation.  The real estate value has increased to $8,650.00, and Priscilla has a

personal property value (including servants) of $14,500.00.  Only two sons are living with her at this time, John R. is a lawyer, and Charles C.

is a student.  The whereabouts of Aquilla is unknown, and Permelia Elizabeth had married McLin Cockrell by this time.  There is listed as

living on the plantation with Priscilla, one e. Cramer, a female fortune-teller with a personal property value of $100.00.  It is not exactly who

this lady is.

Priscilla Ann Hutton Coleman did not survive the Civil War, as she died on 11 December 1863, at the age of 54 years.
