Marriage Record

Short Biography of

Permelia Elizabeth (Coleman) Cockrell

(1837-1904)

Permelia was born to Charles H. and Priscilla Ann Coleman in Green County, Mount Hebron, Alabama in December of 1837.

On 4 January 1855 Permelia married McLin Nusome Cockrell.  The record of marriage can be found in the County Courthouse at Eutaw Alabama, page C-149.  Permelia then moved to Pleasant Ridge.  At the the time of the marriage she was 18 years old and McLin was 20.  As far as is known Permelia and McLin had three children as follows.

Charles Coleman - born October 1855, died 11 April 1920

A. W. - - born about 1858, date of death unknown

Martha P. - Born about 1859, date of death unknown

The final land sale of Permelia and McLin was finalized in Mobile.  After the Civil War, much of their land was lost.  However, the main plantation belonged to Permelia which had been deeded to her prior to the outbreak of hostilities.  The deed appears to have been backdated so as to save the land from the carpetbaggers.  The Cockrells, Colemans, and Huttons were lawyers, judges, etc. etc. and could have easily accomplished this task.

In her last years, Permelia lived with her son Charles Coleman in Ballinger Texas.  It is not known in what year she came to Ballinger.  Family tradition has it that Permelia was first addicted to laudanum while a young lady on the plantation.  Laudanum was freely prescribed by the doctors of that day for anything from upset stomach to more serious ailments.  Later she became addicted to morphine and died a morphine addict. It is not known what her ailment was or why she was prescribed opiates.  She died on Sunday 27 November 1904 at the age of 67 years and 11 months.  It is presumed that she was buried in Ballinger.  However a search of the records in the courthouse of Runnels County revealed no record of her death.
