Short Biography of

Jacob Cockrell

Generation No. 1

1.  JACOB2 COCKRELL  (?1) was born ca. 1750, and died 1792 in Nash Co, NC.  He married PENELOPE ?.

Notes for JACOB COCKRELL:

Jacob Cockrell of Nash County, North Carolina was probably born ca 1750, possibly in NC.  The first record found shows that Jacob and his brother John were listed on the Tax Roll for Nash Co, NC in 1782. On 01 Nov 1784 the State of NC granted to Jacob Cockrell a tract of 100 acres on the east side of Beaver Dam Swamp adjoining William Horn, and a tract of 250 acres on Toisnot Swamp adjoining Thomas Horn and John Eatman.  These grants could have been made as a result of service in the American Revolution; but, to this point, we have no information regarding whether Jacob served with the Continental Army or not.  There were also some earlier grants made in 1782 which we have not found but which are mentioned in other deeds, etc.

When the first Federal census was taken in 1790, Jacob was residing in Nash Co, NC.  The members of his household included one male over 16 (Jacob), two males under 16, and two females.

On August 22, 1792, Jacob wrote his will.  It was probated during the November Court that same year. He apparently died during the late summer or fall.  His will reads as follows:

"In the name of God Amen; I Jacob Cockrell of Nash County in the State of North Carolina being sick and weak but being of perfect mind and memory.  And calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all Men once to die do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament and as for what it hath pleased God to give me.  I do give and bestow in the manner and form following:

Imprimis, I give and bequeath to my son Jonathan Cockrell the Plantation whereon I now live also all the cider casks to him and his heirs forever and if he should die without any lawful Heirs it is my desire that my son Nathan should have it.

Item, I give and bequeath to my son Nathan Cockrell one Negro girl by the name of Seal also one feather bed & furniture, one horse colt, one Hundred acres of Land lying on the beaver dam to him and his Heirs forever.

Item, I give and bequeath to my Daughter Selah Cockrell one Negro Man by the name of Plato, also one feather bed & furniture to her and her Heirs forever.

Also all the reasidue of my Estate to her during her Widow Hood after my debts is paid and after her Widowhood it is my desire that my son William Haywood Cockrell should have it also it is my desire the he should have the Bed & furniture after her death to him and his Heirs forever.

Item, I do hereby nominate and appoint John Eatman my whole and sole Executor of this my last Will and testament revoking all others by me here to fore made being null and void. May it please the Honorable Court of Nash to grant Mr. Eatman leave of the Court to sell as much of my property as will pay off my Debts without a publick sale and no more to be sold but what pays off debts: as Witness my hand and seal the 22 day of August 1792."  Jacob Cockrell (Seal)

Signed, sealed, published and delivered in the presents of us--John (X) Cockrell and John Vick

and is registered in obedience to the above order.  Attest:  Wm Hallcele(?)

Jacob's brother John who witnessed his will also acted as guardian to his minor children.  On 03 Sept 1800, Jonathan Cockrell, heir of Jacob Cockrell, deceased, and Penelope Williams, the former wife of Jacob Cockrell, deceased, sold to George Green of Nash County, for 50 lbs. specie, 100 acres on Millstone Swamp, it being a tract of land granted unto Jacob in 1782.  The sale was witnessed by John Sanders and Selah Cockrell.

Notes for PENELOPE ?:

Sometime between Jacob's death in the later summer or fall of 1782 and 03 Sept 1800, Penelope Cockrell married an unknown Williams man.  Penelope's maiden name is unknown but she may have been a Haywood and named her youngest child William Haywood after her father.

5.  WILLIAM HAYWOOD3 COCKRELL (JACOB2, ?1) was born ca. 1790 in Nash Co, NC.  He married ??.

Notes for WILLIAM HAYWOOD COCKRELL:

It is generally assumed that William Haywood Cockrell was born between the time the 1790 census was taken and 22 Aug 1792 when his father wrote his will.  It is possible, however, that he is one of the two males under 16 in the census and that one of his older brothers was not living at home at the time of the Census.  After his father's death his uncle John Cockrell acted as his guardian; and it appears he was living with him in 1800 at the time of the census.

William H. Cockrell apparently married at a relatively young age for that time.  Most men did not marry until their mid- to late-twenties after they had had time to acquire property and were able to provide for a family.  Perhaps because Jacob had already died and his mother Penelope had remarried, allowing him to come into his inheritance at an early age, he was able to marry, possibly as early as 1809.  We do not know who his first wife was but he probably married in Nash Co.  It is uncertain when she died but it was probably in the mid-1820's.

After the American Revolution, North Carolina experienced problems of transition from wartime to peacetime and was attempting to provide for disgruntled veterans of the War.  They were also attempting to hang on to the independent State of Franklin.  Finally, they ceded this territory which eventually became the State of Tennessee.  The state was stagnating.  Citizens of North Carolina did not share the enlightened views of national politics held by Thomas Jefferson and his successors.  They held scant enthusiasm for the "New Nationalism" and made little contribution to the War of 1812.  In fact, North Carolina acquired the reputation of being a "Rip Van Winkle" state because of its inertia, economic stagnation, illiteracy, one-party politics, immigration and provincialism. (Collier's Encyclopedia, published in NY by Macmillan Educational Corporation, 1978.)

It was this climate which probably prompted the immigration of Cockrells from both Nash County and Johnston County between 1815-1835 to Greene and Pickens Counties, AL.  In 1783 Alabama had been ceded to the US as part of Georgia in the Treaty of Paris following the American victory in the Revolutionary War. In 1804 the Mississippi Territory which was created in 1798 was enlarged to include most of Mississippi and Alabama. After the War of 1812 the great influx of settlers began, mainly from Virginia and the Carolinas.  By 1817 Alabama had become a territory.  It's population increased so dramatically that it became the twenty-second state in December 1819. (Handy Book for Genealogists, 7th Edition, published by The Everton Publishers, Inc., Logan, UT, 1981)  The Cockrells arrived in the western part of the state between 1815 and 1835.  Some members of the same family would move into Alabama to establish homes while others remained in North Carolina to sell property.  Once this was accomplished, they would follow their relatives into Alabama.

We believe the first record we find for William Haywood Cockrell in Alabama is the marriage of William H Cockrell to Susan Cam on 11 Mar 1827 in Greene County, AL.  While it has not been definitively proved that this William H was William Haywood, we have not found any researchers who believe it was one of their Cockrells.  His first wife may have died in 1826 sometime, possibly in childbirth, and he remarried fairly soon in order to provide a mother for his children.

The first time we find William Haywood Cockrell in the census records in Greene County, AL is in 1830.  No census records for Greene County for 1820 survive.  In the 1830 census he is listed as head of household (age 30-40), with one male (age 20-30), one male (15 to 20), one male (under 5), one female 30-40, one female 10-15, two females 5-10, and two females under 5.  If he did marry Susan Cam in 1827, the only children that could have been hers were those under 5 and probably not all three of them unless she had twins.

In the 1840 census, Willima H is again listed as head of household (age 40-50), with one male (10-15), one male (5-9), one female (30-40), one female (15-20), and one female (10-15).  By this time, his son Griffin had married, his older son who is believed to be Thomas had already moved west--never to be heard from again, and his daughter Pernina had married Jesse Leopard and was living next door to William Haywood.  The unidentified daughter in the 1830 census who was one of the two who were 5-10 had already married or died. One of the two daughters under 5 in the 1830 census had also either married (at an extremely young age) or died.

After 1840, we are unable to locate William Haywood Cockrell in any of the records.  It is entirely possible that he moved to MS with Griffin in the mid-1840's; however, we are also unable to locate Griffin in the 1850 census.

Tradition says that Hillsman had six sons and one daughter with Louisa Horn.  As you can see, there are two daughters, both of whom were living with him in 1860.  If there were any other sons, they were either born after 1860 or died by 1860.  Hillsman supposedly had three daughters and two sons by his second wife during the seven years they were married prior to his death.

Notes for GRIFFIN COCKRELL:

Griffin and Cynthia (Henderson) Cockrell moved to Mississippi sometime between 1841 and 1845.  The three oldest that we know had all been born in AL according to various census records--Julia ca. 1836, Mary, ca. 1839 and Martha ca. 1841.  Although the mortality schedules of the 1880 census report that Griffin had resided in MS 40 years prior to his death in November, 1879, it was more than likely not an accurate measure of the time he had lived there but an instance of someone saying, "I've lived here almost 40 years."  His second wife, Martha Burchfield, had been married to him less than ten years and probably did not know the exact time he had lived in MS.

Mississippi became the twentieth state in 1817.  Thousands of settlers had come from the eastern and northern states between 1803 and 1817.  Another tremendous inflex began in 1837 after the last of the Indian lands were opened for settlement. (The Handy Book for Genealogists) It was more than likely during the middle part of this influx, 1841 to 1845 that Griffin and Cynthia arrived in the eastern part of the state.  The rest of their children were born in MS, beginning with Milly ca. 1845.  It is possible that they had other children in the late 1830's or early 1840's who had already married by the time we find Griffin again in the 1860 census.  All the family seems to agree that Sam had a sister named Jane Hayes.  Unless one of the known daughters of Griffin had a middle name of Jane, we are unable to identify her.

Robert Cockrell of Cedar Bluff, MS, says that Griffin is a legend in Clay County, MS.  He supposedly served with an elite calvary unit during the Civil War.  Every man who joined this unit had to be an excellent shot and rider, and own a good horse.  After the Civil War, it was difficult to find Griffin in the census reports.  Robert thinks this is because he was an unreconstructed rebel.  The legend goes that during Reconstruction, one of Griffin's friends was going to be hanged by the occupying army.  The man was standing on the gallows with a noose around his neck when Griffin galloped up, shot the rope in two, rescued his friend, and went into hiding.  Robert who is distantly related lives just a few miles from Griffin's old home place in Clay County.

16.  PERNINA4 COCKRELL (WILLIAM HAYWOOD3, JACOB2, ?1) was born ca. 1816 in Nash Co, NC, and died Aft. 1870.  She married JESSE LEOPARD 14 Jun 1834 in Greene Co, AL89,90.  He was born ca. 1810 in NC, and died Aft. 1870.

Notes for JESSE LEOPARD:

The 1870 census lists a Louisa, age 15,  beneath Leonidas and a 3-yr old girl Mary E.  Since Louisa does not appear on the 1860 census, she may have been Leonidas' wife, albeit a young one, and the 3-year old may have been a grandchild instead of a daughter.  It could also be that Louisa was just left off the 1860 census because the census taker made a mistake.

Notes for SAMUEL JEFFERSON COCKRELL:

Family legend contributed by his grandson Sam Cockrell has it that Samuel Jefferson Cockrell's brother Jakey named him.  Although Jakey was only three or four years old at the time of Samuel's birth the story rings true for it is something a youngster might suggest.  When Jakey was told he had a baby brother, he said, "Let's name him after that old mule in the back."  The mule's name was Sam.  Griffin and Cynthia no doubt formalized and lengthened that name.  The family New Testament lists him as S.J.D. Cockrell.  This is, however, the only record that I found that gives a third initial.

I'm sure the naming was considered prophetic by some of the members of his family for he's been described as mule-headed, strong of purpose, obstinate, opinionated, and having a strong sense of right and wrong. Regardless, it is agreed by all who remember him that he had an upright bearing and manner, knew his own mind, and was not apt to allow anyone to change it.

He also had a puckish sense of humor.  One of my favorite stories was passed on to me by his granddaughter Mildred (McClure) Jennings.  After the Civil War, Sam had an uncle living with him who had lost both legs at the knees (or who had severe arthritis depending on who is telling the story).  He also had several cousins living with him.  His uncle had a cart to ride around in and had rigged up a harness for Sam and one of his cousins to use to pull the cart.  One morning after a heavy rain, he harnessed up the boys to take him to visit a neighbor across the creek.  I'm sure the boys weren't thrilled about this chore.  When they got down to the creek, their uncle realized he would get wet if they tried to cross because the creek had risen from the rain.  He began yelling, "Whoa! Whoa!"  The boys looked at each other and the imp of mischief was in both sets of eyes.  They immediately decided that the horses were going to "run away" so pulled their uncle through the creek thoroughly drenching all three.  Nothing would do then but to pull him back through to return him to the right side of the creek.  When they returned home, they were severely chastised.  I suspect, however, that they thought their mischief was well worth it.

Relatives tell me that Sam had no formal schooling.  One story is that after his mother died no one made him go to school.  Another is that he went to school two days--the first day he didn't have a book; the second, he didn't have a teacher.  The implication was that he was such a hellion the teacher quit rather than return to a classroom that Sam occupied.  I suspect Sam himself told the second story with a twinkle in his eye.

Everyone who wrote me about Sam agreed that he took pride in his dress and always looked sharp.  I heard versions of the same story regarding Sam's feeling that every male should always wear a hat or cap when outdoors.  Most of the stories seem to agree that he refused to give a young boy a ride because this compulsory piece of clothing was missing.

Sam was a farmer, a first-class carpenter, a blacksmith, a Watkins man (peddler of pots and pans), a healing medium and a masseur.  Prior to becoming a masseur I'm told he was a Socialist and fully believed the rich should be forced to share their wealth with those less fortunate.  I don't know if this belief survived his graduation as a masseur.  I'm told he was tired to being poor so decided to do something about it.  On June 21, 1921, Sam was awarded a diploma from the Weltmer Institute of Suggestive Therapeutics as a masseur, which was recorded on November 21, 1921 in Comanche Co, TX.

While Sam had no formal education, he could cipher in his head; and his wife Callie taught him to read and write.  It is said that his daughter-in-law Edith, Alideen's wife, helped him get his diploma as a masseur.

Sam and Callie were staunch Methodists.  Sam also loved music and could dance the jig.  He was always ahead of his time.  I'm told he had the first Model A in Comanche and enjoyed flying.  He was a gifted speaker and kept his listeners spellbound.

He also had more nerves, guts or stubbornness than most people.  Mildred (McClure) Jennings tells of the time when he was in his sixties and decided to have all his teeth pulled at one sitting.  He, Callie, Alideen and Edith drove from Comanche to Fort Worth where his teeth were pulled, dentures made and fitted, and then Sam drove everyone back home, all in one day.  No one else was ever allowed to drive his cars.

At 75 his license was rescinded because he started driving 75 mph down the middle of the highway.  At that time he was forced to allow someone else to do the driving.  His son Jake was living with Sam and Callie at the time so it became his chore.

Notes for MALINDA CAROLINE MITCHELL:

Malina Caroline "Callie" Mitchell married Samuel J. Cockrell in Clay County, MS.  Members of the family remember her as a staunch supporter of Sam.  Everything he said was right and no one should dispute it.  It's been said that she did not have a lot to say for herself although it's my understanding she could be quite tart when it pleased her.  Mildred McClure Jennings tells me that she was about 5'9" tall with pretty blue eyes, long black hair, and a fair complexion.  Her world revolved around Sam.  She was quiet and reserved and Sam, with his more outgoing personality, overshadowed her.

28.  MARY ETTA5 COCKRELL (GRIFFIN4, WILLIAM HAYWOOD3, JACOB2, ?1) was born ca. 1873 in Clay Co, MS.  She married WILLIAM A. HOWARD 24 Sep 1892.

Notes for MARY ETTA COCKRELL:

Mary Etta had a daughter by her husband William Howard.  He, however, did not believe the child was his because he had had the mumps and thought he was incapable of fathering a child.  Howard divorced her and her family sent her to stay with other family members in MS until the furor died down.  She had an illegitimate child while she was away.  Her mother decided to send to some of her relatives in TX.  She did not get off the train at her stop in TX and she and her children were never heard from again.  This story comes from Robert Cockrell who wonders if she ever really left MS.

Notes for ARCHIE B COCKRELL:

As a young man, Archie was a "rip snorter."  He was always in trouble.  Years later he met a former preacher and asked him if he remembered him.  The preacher answered, "Oh, yes, you were the boy who used to roll the peaches down the aisle to the girls in front."  When he was 16 years old, he crushed his ankle when he and his paint horse slid down a steep river bank with Archie's ankle trapped between the horse and the river bank.  He spent a year in bed to pay for this devilment.

There were men in the community who would not let their daughters go out with Archie.  He told stories about the girls crawling out their windows to go with him.  One night while riding home, he met one of these men at a crossroads.  Going too fast to stop, he jumped his horse over the hood of the man's car.  As you can imagine, this did little to endear him to the man.

As a young man during the depression, Archie hitchhiked around the country.  He had been to almost all the states in the Union.  He was in the CCC and fought forest fires in Washington State.  He told me once that he dropped out of high school as a junior because he thought he knew more than the teachers.  Archie always regretted this but did get his GED about 1951.  He loved history and he liked to draw.  His artistic talent was passed down to his son and his grandson Brian Gilbert.

During World War II Archie was stationed in Hawaii.  He was a medic and a pastry chef during his time in the Army.  While he was in the service, he had a permanent to make his hair curly.  There is an unsubstantiated story in the family that he lived with a Hawaiian woman during the War and may even have had several children with her.

Archie and Margaret were married 05 May 1945 in Fort Worth.  They bought a farm in Fieldton near Littlefield, TX.  The farm was unirrigated and in the Panhandle of Texas that is not a good way to try to make a living. When he tried to get a loan to irrigate, the Grange told him he had to sell his new car and buy a used one.  Being as stubborn as his grandfather Sam, Archie didn't think they should be allowed to dictate to him so he sold the farm in early 1950 and moved his family to Sherman where he went into the grocery business with Wilson Starnes, one of Margaret's brothers.  That business lasted only a year before they went broke.  Seems like neither one of them could turn away anyone with a sad story.

In 1952 Archie moved his family to Amarillo, TX.  He went to work there as a machinist at Pantex Ordinance Plant, just outside of Amarillo, where he worked until he died.  During a slow time at the plant he was laid off and worked at anything he could find to feed his wife and children.  Archie and Margaret even towed cars from Amarillo to other cities in Texas.  He also worked long, long hours for his brother A.C. at A.C.'s service station.  Times got better when he was rehired at Pantex.

Sometime around the summer of 1959, he decided that the family home was too small.  He added on to the house and did all the work himself with help from friends.  It wasn't perfect but we thought it was.

Archie always regretted selling the farm.  After it was done, he realized he had "cut off his nose to spite his face."  In the late 1950's or early 1960's he bought land outside Vega, TX and farmed it on the weekends.

Christmas at the Cockrells was always special.  We didn't have a lot of money to spend but Archie and Maggie were rich in ideas.  One year Archie bid on plywood boxes at the Plant.  With those boxes he built us a playhouse for Christmas.  It was about 8' x 6'.  The old linoleum from the kitchen was used to cover the floor.  The walls were painted white with red trim around the two tiny windows.  Archie built in a table painted white with red trim which would fold up to the wall.  Above the table, he built shelves for our dishes.  Maggie  made a curtain to cover the shelves.  We even had a couch.  They took an old wooden twin bed frame and sawed the headboard and footboard in half.  Half of it was placed against the wall with half on the floor.  The old feather mattress was roped through the middle lengthwise with half against the wall and half forming the seat.  Maggie made a slip cover.  We thought we were the richest kids in the neighborhood.  No one else we knew had a playhouse.  We even had heat in winter because they ran an electric cord out the kitchen window for a small electric heater.

On another Christmas, Archie build small chests for each of us to keep our dolls in.  The Christmas when four-poster doll beds were all the rage did not find us wanting.  Archie used  one inch dowels for the posters.  At the top he used a big nail around which he wrapped stiff wire to form the frame to hold the tester.  Maggie made mattresses and pillows out of real mattress ticking.  Each of us had a different colored organdy spread and tester on our beds, blue, pink and green.  Again, we thought we were the richest people in the neighborhood.

In our family, we always exchanged family gifts on Christmas Eve.  Then, during the night, Santa visited us.  We would awake in the morning to a tree around which Santa had arranged our gifts.  Santa never wrapped these presents but placed them in each child's designated place under the tree.

Short Biography of

Nathan Cockrell

Nathan Cockrell was born to Jacob and Penelope Cockrell around 1782 in Nash County, North Carolina.  He married Nancy Williams ca. 1807 in Nash County,

North Carolina.

When Jacob Cockrell (Nathan’ father) died he bequeathed to Nathan one Negro girl by the name of Seal also one feather bed & furniture, one horse colt, and one Hundred acres of Land lying on the beaver dam.

It was this climate which probably prompted the immigration of Cockrells from both Nash County and Johnston County between 1815-1835 to Greene and Pickens Counties, Alabama. By 1817 Alabama hadbecome a territory.  It's population increased so dramatically that it became the twenty-second state in December 1819. (Handy Book for Genealogists, 7th Edition, published by The Everton Publishers, Inc., Logan, UT, 1981)  The Cockrell’s arrived in the western part of the state between 1815 and 1835.  Some members of the same family would move into Alabama to establish homes while others remained in North

Carolina to sell property.  Once this was accomplished, they would follow their relatives into Alabama.

In approximately 1819 Nathan and his brother Jonathan moved to Alabama.  William and Dempsey settled in Greene County before Sumter County was open for settlement.  William (W. J.) Cockrell settled at Sumterville while Dempsey settled at McCainsville.  Several members of the Cockrell family are buried in the Old Side Cemetery.

Children of Nathan Cockrell and Nancy Williams are:

Dempsey Cockrell  Born 02 Jan 1809, Nash County, North Carolina; died. Apr 1886, Sumter County, Alabama.

McLin Nusome Cockrell

Very little is know of the early life of McLin Nuson Cockrell.  He was born approximately 1829 in Alabama, most probably in Greene County.  However one source

identifies him as being born in Demopolis which is in Marengo County,  His parents were Nathan Cockrell and Nancy Williams.  It is said in oral family tradition that

McLin derived his name from a grandparents last name.  Thus he is linked to Clan Gillean/MacLean/MacLaine of Scotland.

The spelling of his first name has appeared several ways on documents pertaining to him.  These variations are: “McLin”,MacLin, McLinn and Macklin.  All records containing his signature are signed simply as M. N. Cockrell.  All variants are directly linked to Clan Gillean/MacLean/MacLaine.

McLin had eight brothers and sisters as follow:

Dempsey - born Nash County, North Carolina

Jacob - born Nash County, North Carolina

Susan - born Nash County, North Carolina

Emmerson - born Nash County North Carolina

William J. - born Nash County North Carolina

Samuel Williams - born Green County, Alabama

Charity Cathrine - born Green County, Alabama

Nathan Jr. - born Green County, Alabama

McLin’s father, Nathan Cockrell, died on 12 November 1832.  The minor children were then placed under the guardianship of Dempsey and Jonathan Cockrell.  William J., Samuel Williams, and Nathan Jr. were placed under the guardianship of their older brother Dempsey, while Emmerson, Charity, and McLin were under the guardianship of their Uncle Jonathan.

McLin is listed in the 1850 U.S. Census on page 289 as living in Eutaw, Alabama.  Directly above McLin is listed a “Samuel Cockrell” “Attorney at Law”.   McLin’s name is spelled “McLin”.  In the same census he is shown as living with Dempsey Cockrell.  In this entry his name is spelled Macklin, and is shown to be 20 years old.  His profession is given as Student of Law.

Five years later, on the first day of January 1855, McLin N. Cockrell and Permelia Elizabeth Coleman registered with Judge J. R. Evans to be married.  The Reverand A. P. Silliman solomized the rites of matrimony on 4 January 1855.  The record of marriage may be found inbook “C” page 49 of the Green County Marriage Records.  The new couple settled at Pleasant Ridge, Alabama.  The land on which their plantation house was located was owned by Permelia according to the “Bostic Deed”

In the 1860 U.S. Census, page 941, Plesant Ridge, McLin gives his occupation as “Planter”.  His real estate holdings amounted to $10,700.00, and his personal property value (including slaves and servants) amounted to $78,000.00. There are three children listed at this time.

Charles Coleman - born October 1855, Died in Ballinger, Runnels County, Texas 11 April 1920

A. W. - born about 1858, died 1867, Buiried Greene County Alabama

Martha P - born about November 1859, date of death unknown

McLin and Permelia owned in excess of 1,480 acres of land.  Most of the land buying and selling was kept pretty much within the Hutton, Coleman, Cockrell families.  On 29 December 1849, Nathan M.Carpenter, husband of the late Catherine Cockrell executed a land bond to Dempsey, Jacob, William, Samuel, Nathan & McLin Cockrell.  Evidently the land (80 acres) belonged originally to Catherine.  Under the law known as the “Woman’s Law”, the conditions of the land bond were that Nathan Carpenter was to pay the Cockrell’s $1,000.00 for the land.  One half while he, Nathan Carpenter, was still living, and the remaining half to be paid by the executors of his estate upon his death.

On 12 Feburary 1852, Nathan and Mclin Cockrell bought approximately 440 acres from Jonathan Cockrell for $5,100.00.  Two years later, on 21 November, this land

was sold to Robert B. Dunlap for $5,500.00

On 19 September 1856, McLin purchased 160 acres from his brother-in-law, John R. Coleman, for $240.00.  Part of the land in this purchase belonged to his other brother-in-law, Aquilla H. Coleman.  On 25 September 1856, he paid Aquilla $256.00 for his part of the land plus an additional 8 acres.  The two transactions consisted of about 240 acres.  In January of 1857, McLin sold 160 acres of this land to John N. Hutton for 1,280.00.  This land transaction included a land exchange agreement whereby McLin purchased from John Hutton 212 acres for the sum of $1,480.00.  The next year, on 15 May 1858, McLin sold the land he purchased from John Hutton to James B. Cook along with some other lands totaling 515 acres for the sum of $5,000.00

On 31 January 1857, McLin and Aquilla entered into another land exchange agreement whereby McLinpaid $1,518.00 and exchanged an unspecified amount of land in exchange for 333 acres.  McLin in turn sold part of these lands to James B. Cook in the land deal mentioned above.

McLin enlisted in the Company B, 36th Alabama Infantry and was elected it’s 2nd Lieutenant.  His Company Commander Nathan Carpenter was elected Captain.  The regiment was commanded by Colonel R. H. Smith.  He was first stationed at Mount Vernon Arsenal near Mobile, Alabama.  His Civil War records show that he signed for fuel rations (wood) for his company on 1 June of 1862.   McLin also signed various pay documents in which he was paid $80.00 per month as a Lieutenant.

McLin’s Regiment moved from Alabama northward to Tennessee where it joined the Army of Tennessee under the command of General Braxton Bragg.  This was

unfortunate indeed, as Bragg was notorious for neglect of his men.  As a result they suffered greatly. McLin fought at the bloody battle of Chickamauga Georgia where his regiment served under Colonel L. T. Woodruff.  The 36th Alabama was brigaded to Brigadier General Henry DeLamar Clayton in Major General Alexander Peter Stewart’s Division of Major General Simon Bolivar Buckner’s Corps.

In the subsequent siege of Chattanooga, McLin’s regiment was reassigned to Colonel James Thaddeus Holtzclaw’s Brigade.  The brigade was still under the command of Major General Stewart, but the Corps was now commanded by Major General John Cabell Breckenridge.  Union General Grant’s arrival in Chattanooga vastly changed the situation.

He managed to break the siege and sent General Bragg in a headlong retreat toward Georgia.  During the battle of Missionary Ridge, 25 November 1863, McLin was captured.  He was first sent to Louisville, Kentucky where he was awaiting a prisoner exchange.  General Grant, however, stopped all prisoner exchanges.  He could afford to loose more men than Bragg and therefore had no need of prisoner exchanges.  From Knoxville, McLin was sent to the infamous Johnson’s Island prisoner of war camp in Ohio.  Many confederate soldiers froze to death at this POW camp during the bitter winters.  Somehow McLin managed to survive this ordeal.  At the conclusion of hostilities, McLin was released from Johnson’s Island on 13 June 1865.

The last land transaction on record was after the Civil War.  McLin and Permelia sold to Penelope M. Steele 150 acres for the sum of $2,900.00.  This land was originally owned by Permelia and was deeded to her by Charles Bostic.  This land also included the plantation house and was sold to Mrs. Steele on 11 January 1869.  Evidently McLin and Permelia had other lands or houses to live in, as in the 1870 U.S. Census, page 799, Plesant Ridge, Alabama, McLin lists himself as a “Commercial

Merchant”.  Permelia is listed as keeping house, Charles Coleman is a student at the University of Alabama, Martha P. is listed, but does not give any Information as to her occupation.  There is no mention for A. W. Cockrell.  Also living in the Cockrell household in a Harriet Brownlee, a 35 year old female mulatto listed as a domestic servant, and Amanda Cockrell, a 34 year old black female also listed a domestic servant.

From this point forward no records of McLin have been found.  He died in Green County, Alabama on 6 October 1887.  The final land deed to Mrs. Steele was finalized in Mobile, Alabama.  It is not know when McLin died or where he is buried.  Permelia, however, is recorded as living with her son Charles Coleman Cockrell in Ballinger, Texas where she is buried.

Josie Cockrell Letter

A transcription of a letter written by Josie Cockrell (wife of Nathan Cockrell) during the Civil War.

Some parts are missing as the letter was eaten away in some parts.

Demopolis, May 6, 1862

Dear Sis Permelia

I am brought at last to the brink of black despair by the long sad separation of my dear husband.  What a cruel war this is.  Its chief business seems to be to

destroy human life, to gash and hue the boys, to plunge a sword into the heart of a fellow creature.  It is to batter down and burn cities, to turn fruitful fields

into deserts, to leave cottage of a peasant and the magnificent abode of opulence, to scourge our nation with famine and to multiply widows and orphans.

I fear we are lingering under a cloud of doom that will burst on us anon, with direful fury.  Three long weary weeks have elapsed since Nat’s departure.

I have received 7 letters from him.  One yesterday stating that he and brother Mac enjoyed good health. This cheering to hear that much grateful intelligence from our dear absent ones. Nate writes a rather doleful letter, he thinks Mobile will soon be occupied by the enemy, then this portion of the country will be polluted by them in their search after cotton.

I don’t feel afraid for I am much depressed in spirit that I am not capable of feeling much anyway.  I struggle with my feelings in order to brase up as long as possible, but finding to bid to life, I had at last to yield myself up and answer to a sea of sickness and pain.  During the past I had several chills, on last Saturday I was _____  _____ half the day, my fever was very high.  Dr. Whitfield visited me, and I am improving so rapidly that I was sitting up today. It is before breakfast now and I am sitting in bed to write.  I have commended several letters to you,but have never concluded any.  I have not been well since I had roseola, sister says I am a good pictureof “pale and green melaconey”.

I was last going to write you a long letter, but mother is in a great hurry to go to “D” so I will have to desist, but I have waited so long I will send this even unfinished.

Nat named our boy Nathan Eddins before he left.  The little fellow has two teeth and two teeth nearly though, they didn’t make him sick to much.  He can crawl good.  Mary Whitfield says he is so white he must have a very fair father.  Pa is sick in bed and Ma is not well at all..  Tell sis and the boys about their little cousin.  Nat – we

call him that, I have so many things to say, but mother Pansy is impatient so I must close.

I will write more at length next time. My love to you and all the children and accept a great parting myself

Write soon to your ,Loving sister

Josie I. Cockrell

Short Biography of

CHARLES COLEMAN COCKRELL

(1855-1920)

Charles Coleman Cockrell was born to McLin Nusome and Permelia Elizabeth on the family plantation at Pleasant Ridge, Greene County, Alabama, in October of 1855.

His father was a wealthy plantation owner and planter.  In 1860 the plantation was valued at $10,700.00 with McLin’s personal property value of $78,000.00.  When the Civil War began, McLin became a Lieutenant in Company B, 36th Alabama Infantry.  Family tradition has it that Charles Coleman was a drummer boy for the 4th Alabama Infantry during the Civil War.

After the Civil War, in 1870, with the plantation and family wealth gone, Charles Coleman attended school at Pleasant Ridge, Alabama and the University of Alabama.  From 1870 to 1880 nothing is known of his life.  In the 1880 U.S. Census, Charles Coleman is listed as living in Jewett, Leon County, Texas with his father-in-law, Jackson Wilson.  In 1880 he married Jackson’s daughter, Emma Alabama, and began teaching school.  In 1882 he was working as a farmer.

Whether this was his farm or his father-in-law’s is unknown.  In 1884, Charles Coleman was working for the local newspaper in Jewett.

In 1900, the U.S. Census shows Charles Coleman to be living in Ballinger, Runnels County, Texas.  His occupation is given as compositor (District Clerk).  In 1904 his mother Permelia Elizabeth Cockrell (Coleman) died in his home on 27 November.  It is not known at what date she came to live with him.  The funeral was held in the Cockrell home the following day.  Permelia was 67 years, 11 months old when she passed away.

In  1910, Charles Coleman and his family resided at 700 Broad Street in Ballinger.  The U.S. Census of that year shows him to be a publisher of the local newspaper.  Two of his son’s Augustus and James are shown to be printers.  Undoubtedly, they worked for their father at the newspaper printing press.  Charles Coleman and his wife had a total of 14 children, of which 11 lived to be grown.  These are:

Clyde Coleman, born Jewett Texas, 8 September 1882

Sidney Earl, born Jewett Texas, 25 October 1884

Maggie P., born Jewett Texas, April 1886, Married C. J. Green, date unknown

Ione Elizabeth, born Jewett Texas, 12 February 1888, Married Gerald Preston Teague, 1 August 1915, Died Austin Texas 16 January 1975, Had three daughters

Dorothy Louise, born 14 November 1916

Billie Lucille, born 2 September 1918

Charles Coleman Cockrell died in Ballinger, Texas on 11 April 1920 of Colon Cancer.  His death record states he died on 10 March 1920, and was not buried until 11 April.  This evidently is a recorded error.  After checking with the Runnels County Clerk, they believe 11 April 1920 to be the correct date of death, and cite the “Proof of Heirship” as their basis for the true date of death.Charles Coleman Cockrell is buried in Ballinger, Texas.

Ione Elizabeth Cockrell

(1888-1975)

Ione Elizabeth Cockrell was born to Charles Coleman and Emma Alabama on 12 February 1888, in Jewett, Leon County Texas.  In the 1900 U.S. census, Ione was living with her parents in Ballinger, Runnels County, Texas.  According to the census she was 12 years old, and attending school.  In the 1910 census she is listed as working for the Telephone Company as a bookkeeper.  While working in this capacity she undoubtedly met Gerald Preston Teague.  Gerald Preston was the

local manager of the Zephyr Telephone Company, and was instrumental in constructing the first telephone line between Brownwood and Ballinger Texas.  Ione and Gerald were married in Brownwood on 1 August 1915.

Ione and Gerald had three daughters as follow:

Ione Elizabeth was very active in her church, and a devout Presbyterian.  This often resulted in her butting heads with her father-in-law, William Henry Teague,a hard-shell Baptist preacher.  Ione was head strong and set in her ways.  She often worked the crossword puzzles in the newspaper.  She would work them out in ink, and would allow herself no mistakes.  If a word did not fit according to her way, then the paper was wrong as far as she was concerned.  As often as not the paper was indeed wrong.

Ione was a nervous sort of person given to sudden and violent headaches.  It is said in her early years, doctors gave her chloroform freely, which would knock her out for days when a headache come on.  She was probably a borderline epileptic which would account for the headaches, and sudden outburst of temper.

Ione Elizabeth moved to Austin, Texas in about 1949 after the death of Gerald Preston.  Here she worked for her sister, Kate Amery, at 1612 Brazos Street.  At this location Kate was operating a boarding house for University students.  Somewhere along the line Ione learned the art of “seamstress”.  She was always making clothes for her grandchildren.

While living in Austin, she remained active in the Presbyterian church.  In the summers she would take her grandson’s, Jerry, Randy, and Charles to visit relatives in Winters, Tulsa, Fort Smith, and New Orleans.  She must have loved to watch movies as she was always taking her grandchildren to a show.  Usually she picked the movie, but one time she was talked into seeing “Jailhouse Rock” starring Elvis Presley.  Her review of the movie was not a favorable one as she judged it as

immoral.

Ione Elizabeth Cockrell Teague died in Austin, Texas on 16 January 1975 of cancer.  She is buried next to her husband Gerald in Ballinger, Texas.  Her Presbyterian church named their new kitchen in her honor.
